Chakula (Food)

Today is all about the food here in Tanzania!  I believe most everyone gets excited about trying new foods when they travel to another country.  However, here in Tanzania the food is very bland and simple.  They use very little spices and herbs, and there is a lack of variety in what is offered.  The typical meal is either white rice or ugali with vegatables, beans, or meat.  Ugali is a traditional Tanzanian food made from millet flour and water.  It turns out looking like white play-doh and has little, if not zero flavor.  With that being said, the food is fine but definitely not mind blowing!

For breakfast we usually have toast with peanut butter (ingredients on the tub say "peanut butter"), fried eggs, and fruit.  The fruit is mostly pineapple and mango.  The mango's here are amazingly juicy and fresh, straight from the tree :)  My new fav!

We have ventured to several restaurants to find more exciting and familiar foods.  Unfortunately, you never know what you are going to end up getting or how it might be prepared.  We have found a number of places that serve pizza which is generally pretty tasty, as well as chips (aka french fries).  We have tried a few hamburgers which most often come with a fried egg on top.  Our favorit discovery so far is a traditional African and Asian food called samosa.  It is a fried triangle shape beauty (pastry) filled with meat and onions (if it's fried and has meat it must be good).  They remind us of egg rolls so we creatively refer to them as egg triangles.  Yum!

Samosa's!!!
That is pretty much the entirety of our diet :)  Oh, I almost forgot . . . we also drink a lot of water, Fanta orange and on occasion, Kilimanjaro beer!

Thats all she wrote!
