Week of Intensive Treatment

During this weeks intensive treatment, Kelly and I were assigned a patient to evaluate, develop a plan of care, participate in treatments, assess in the seating clinic and follow up at her home next week.  Our patient is a 1 year and 4 month old little girl with athetoid cerebral palsy as a result of jaundice.  She has poor neck and trunk control, is unable to sit independently, needs assistance with feeding, does not engage in social interactions with other children, and is basically dependent with all activities.  She is extremely adorable and a very pleasant child to work with.  The girls mother is 21 years old and this is her second child.  Women have children extremely young in Tanzania even if they do not have the financial means or resources to support them.  One of the amazing things about CCBRT is they request a small contribution from the families to pay for the WIT or to help offset the costs of the wheelchairs.  But if they are unable to do so, services are still provided!  Kelly and I both really enjoyed having a patient to follow, being a part of the progress and making this little girl and her families life a little easier!  Below are pictures to show some of the events of the week.

Supine was the only position she could perform independently.
Kelly playing with her in the prone stander to
promote weight bearing through her legs and
increase neck strength.
The static chair that was built for her by the
fabulous wheelchair tech guys!
Holding the patient in place while the mama straps her in.

The patient was able to sit independently
in the chair!  :)
